You and your children should never be threatened, intimidated, bullied or physically hurt in any way at any time. If this is happening – tell someone, seek help and leave. This is not a safe, healthy relationship for yourself or anyone in your care.
Relationships are not always easy; they are work and require a lot of thought and care. Every couple will have disagreements and misunderstandings but yelling, throwing objects and escalating to physical violence is never acceptable. Not only will this seriously damage the relationship and both people involved but also the effects on children who witness this type of violence at home can be devastating. It is confusing and terrifying for them. It breaks the trust they have in us as parents and adults and worse, often leads to the child becoming violent as well and possibly repeating the patterns of abuse they witness in their own adult relationships later in life.
The relationship you have with your spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend or partner is extremely important but this concern extends beyond that to friends, family, caregivers; anyone you and your child are close with. Any person in your life who is abusive in any way needs to be addressed. Child abuse doesn’t always happen in the child’s immediate home but usual is from someone who knows or has regular contact with the child such as family members, friends, baby sitters or caregivers, etc.
Feeling hopeless or stuck in an unhealthy or abusive relationship, the first step may be the hardest and most frightening – telling someone and seeking help. But know this; you have a responsibility and a basic human right to protect yourself and your family. No human being deserves to be bullied, put down, threatened, shoved, hit or abused in any way or form. Living in pain and fear is suffocating and debilitating.
